Playdough snail how do I umake playdough to strengthen my child's handsDid you know there are 27 bones in each hand? What better way to put little hands to good use than with PLAYDOUGH!!  The more kids manipulate it, the more it can help build up strength their little hands!

When you provide your child with the opportunity to grab, squeeze, poke, pinch, pull, squash, roll and make things with play dough it develops their confidence and their hand skills.  By doing this you can also be helping them get ready for school.

Believe it or not, these fine motor skills are the same ones that pave the way to help little hands hold scissors and pencils needed to cut and write.  To help develop a child’s pincer grip you can encourage and supervise them to use colourful matchsticks and pegs to make all kinds of wonderful creations.

Here’s a NO COOK recipe we use at if you want to make some at home.

2 cups plain flour

1 cup of salt

2 tablespoons cream of tartar

2 tablespoons vegetable oil.

Add 2 cups of hot water with food colouring

Use caution when handling the hot water.  Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl, create a well in the centre and then an adult carefully pour in the hot water, oil and food colouring in. Adult mix with a wooden spoon and when it is cool enough kneed with your hands until pliable.  When the playdough has cooled down it’s already to use. Et Viola!
